Like A Girl by Aparna Jain

Every year on 8th of March, International Women’s Day is celebrated in many nations all around the globe. This day is renowned for all the achievements that women achieved in different fields.

Well! Why there is a need to celebrate this day? Why there is a need to tell this world about their achievements?

Since the beginning of this world, women have been oppressed by men. By reading the history, we get to know that how much a woman had been discriminated. They were not given the rights they actually deserve. The world thought that women are feeble, mindless and they deserve only four corner room for their whole life.

Although this world was open to democracy, but still there was an evil taking roots in the society.

But still in this world of evils, there were numerous ladies who fought against the odds for their pride and respect and I’m so glad to share one of the books which is meant to share about some of the brave women of India.

Audio book is available on Audible

-About the Book-

Like A Girl by Aparna Jain is an amazing book that includes 51 real life stories of 56 iconic ladies of India. I would put this book in the Self-help genre as the stories it includes are really inspiring and motivating. The stories have been sorted in a good manner, taking it from Sultan Razia, seven hundred years ago to Poorna Malavath, 2018. The stories are arranged from past to present and you can notice this thing by yourself.

I listened to the audio book which is available only on Audible. It includes 53 chapters in it. It has been narrated by some of the well-know ladies of India who have achieved the greater heights in a particular field.

There are many historical figures, singers, actors, dancers, sports women, scientists, activists etc. have been shared that I recognize just by their name. But still there are many hidden gems that I got to know only after listening to this book.

Their stories are described in a manner that kids can enjoy thoroughly and adults can feel motivated. I personally got inspired after listening to the life story of Muthulakshmi Reddy who became the first woman legislator in British India and another story of Leila Seth, who became first woman judge in the Delhi High Court. Rather I would say, every single life story was putting a big impression on me.

I love writer’s selections of 56 iconic women of India. I know it’s difficult to sum up a lot of names in one single book but she has done a great job.

If you want to buy the book, you can have the hardcover which comes with illustrations and that thing make this book much readable.(Link to the book:- https://amzn.to/2Cj9RuW). But if you have a membership for audible then you must listen to this book there. This book is narrated by some of the amazing star ladies of our nation- Suchitra Pillai(Actress), Varsha Varghese(Founder of Wordsworth project), Tisca Chopra (One of my favorite actress), Ritu Dalmia(Celebrity Chef), Kirti Jaykumar(Women’s Right Activist), Rasika Dugal (Actress), Aparna Jain(Writer, herself) etc.

-Recommendation-

I would especially recommend this book to kids. Do make your children read it as I feel this book has a power to make them follow their dream. But everyone can read this book.

So, my experience with this book was amazing. It’s short and impactful.

I can surely say this book is a blessing for all girls who think they can’t achieve something in their life. There is something that writer has to say to those girls:

“The next time someone try to insult you by saying ‘Just like a girl’, remind them as far as you are concerned, it is a compliment!”
